The Academy is delighted to offer an apprenticeship where crew will have the opportunity to gain the internationally recognised STCW II/3 Master <500GT near coastal certificate of competence. This licence permits the holder to not only work in the near-coastal (<150nm) waters of another country, but also to apply for a certificate of equivalent competency required to be crew under another flag. The Article IX licences such as the Workboat <200GT and <500GT do not meet the standards stated in the Annexes of the convention. As a consequence, there is no international agreement for their acceptance by another flag state.

The apprenticeship is called “Workboat Crewmember” and the government will fund up to £20,000 in support this training. This finally gives this sector of the industry the investment in training that it urgently requires similar to those seeking careers deep sea. Anyone interested should speak to their employer and contact the Academy for details of how to enrol.
